Those guests visiting our news & political forum for the first time may be confused by the frequent references to theword. made by several members. So, here's a quick breakdown of what it is and what its about.
Opinionated students at a small high school in Newark, NJ were tired of the bland, teen-oriented news their classmates were receiving. So, they decided to start an underground paper to bring to the masses what everyone else "dare not say".
This paper has covered political topics ranging from the occupation of Iraq, to
gay marriage, to the bureaucracy of Newark and other urban cities. This much needed breath of fresh air has grown from a single sheet handout to an 8 page issue complete with a website (www.thewordonline.net) and forum within a two year span (including month long downtimes).
One of theword.'s columnists, Anthony Diaz (18), was recently picked to be
showcased on an MTV show called "True Life: Surviving High School".
Even though the reference was short and sweet, there is a mention of the word
and the founder, Michael Ortega (18), as well as me T. Monk appear besides
Anthony in many of his shots.
